Communication / IRC

At MetaBrainz, we use various IRC channels for real-time chat and discussions.

Usage:

All users of the IRC channels are expected to follow the Code of Conduct as well as the general guidelines of the Libera.Chat network.

If you are not familiar with how IRC works, it can seem a bit odd at first. Here are some rules of thumb that will make you (and everyone else) have a better time.

Method 1: Quickstart (Not recommended long-term)

If you're new to all of this IRC stuff and just quickly want to ask a question not related to technical code stuff, use the KiwiIRC links to quickly join the IRC channel in your web browser. Because of issues with spammers nickname registration is required (see guide) before you can view or join the discussion.

You can refer to the chatlogs if you disconnect.

Method 2: Using an IRC client (Recommended long-term)

If you wish to stick around longer, it’s recommended to use any IRC clients like element.io or irccloud that support persistent connections to your IRC channel allowing you to store your chats and receive notifications even if you’re inactive. (Alternatively, you can use a BNC if you are feeling adventurous.)

You might also protect your identity by registering your IRC nick.

e.g. You can manually add the #metabrainz channel on the irc.libera.chat network using the element.io IRC client as follows:

  1. Navigate to app.element.io/ and signup.

  2. Click “Add” and then “Join Public Room”

  3. Click "Show: Matrix rooms (matrix.org)", and select libera.chat from the drop down menu.

  4. Look up “#metabrainz” (or the channel of your choice) and hit join!
